The Welder-Passion Project
The entire project was idea of using this sort of blade runner style of lighting. We were in metal shop where we had an actual welder as our key subject/actor. He was sculpting out of steel this molten shape gate section. For some the processes might be nothing but it was facilitating seeing some of the steps went in to just having one metal pike to be done. We took on an approach of having higher contrast lighting with visual effects , in this case ARRI S-60 sky panels were the perfect choice. The reds, yellows and greens were fairly clear and has given us correct temperature with out using gels. This saved time because we could have the effects dialed to have fire effect as if someone else was working in the shop. Astera and quasar played a huge role in being practicals and as key lights in some scenes. How ever they had a very club like effect and were not widely favored by the rest of the crew. Some challenges were to have a very lit areas and areas where it was just lit enough. We used several triple riser stands to have lighting above the operating level of the worker for bouncing and ability to create an atmosphere. The hazer was able to cut the beam from being to direct and spill the light through the air as if there is slight smog in the air from all the machinery . Be free to look at some lighting brake down.
